‘PHOTOGRAPHING THE NIGHT SKY’

a Memorial edition

Due to high demand, Alyn’s book, Photographing The Night Sky 1st Edition sold out in April 2024. Over the last month before Alyn suddenly passed away, he worked on corrections for a reprint.

This 2nd Edition of Photographing the Night Sky is now in stock. There are softbacks and a limited run of hardbacks available. This is now a Memorial Edition with a new cover (featuring Alyn) and several pages devoted to Alyn.

After 4 and a half years of hard work, I have finally completed this 570 page beast! It’s the encyclopedic guide to landscape astrophotography and covers everything from gear, settings, multi-exposure techniques, basic astronomy, post-processing and a guide to the best locations around the world. Learn how to photograph all the night sky wonders such as the Milky Way, aurora, Moon, planets, solar and lunar eclipses, meteor showers and much more. I cannot wait for you to get your hands on it!

The devastating impact of Light Pollution

In the 50 years since humans landed on the Moon the human population has more than doubled. Cities are bigger and brighter than ever and even towns and villages are becoming more illuminated. Making matters worse, orange-yellow sodium bulbs are now being replaced by blue-rich, white LED bulbs which have a much more disruptive effect on the circadian rythms of humans and wildlife, the migratory patterns of birds and the balance of the food chain.

On the plus side, light pollution is a forrm of pollution that can be solved with the flick of a switch and other measures will allow for less disruption of humans and wildlife and a decrease in wasted energy. Find out more in my TedX Talk:

move shoot move z/v mount - designed by Alyn wallace

After working with Move Shoot Move for a number of years promoting their incredibly portable star tracker, I sent them a design for a mount I felt would help astrophotographers get the most out of star trackers and they brought my idea to life.

The Z/V mounts provide a level base to mount your ballhead on top of a star tracker, which would otherwise leave your ballhead at an awkward angle. This makes general use and especially tracked panoramas much easier to perform.

Little did I expect, people would find all sorts of uses for them. Just check the reviews! People have used them for macro photography, holding binoculars steady, as a microphone stand and even as a ballhead replacement altogether.

Brand partners

Benro Pro Partner

I have been supported by Benro, literally, since before I even became a full-time photographer. They design products that last and sell them at incredibly reasonable prices which is why I’m so happy to work with them and recommend their products.

The Tortoise 34CVL is my current workhorse - the built-in levelling head is useful for so many aspects of astrophotography which I explained in a recent video. But I also use the Benro Carbon Fibre Slim as my vlogging tripod and love the Mach 3 series.

Shimoda Ambassador

The moment I felt how comfortable Shimoda bags were I couldn’t go back to any other bag. With the camera core units they are unbelievably adaptable and flexible. I also love that there’s plenty of room for non-photography related items like camping gear, outer layers and food to keep you fuelled on your adventures.

The Shimoda Action X50 has been my main bag for over 3 years now and despite how much of a beating it has taken, there are no rips, tears or holes anywhere and all the zips and buckles are still working like they did on day 1.
